Landing & Catching
Goals:
- To safely lower energy to zero
-Change in Kinetic Energy = Force x Displacement
Increase/use a lot of displacement
- To drop from a box (30 cm high), land softly and cut quickly in reaction to a ball being tossed to the side.
Biomechanical Factors:
o Conservation of Energy
-Energy cannot be created or destroyed
o Conservation of Momentum
-Momentum = Mass x Velocity
-In a closed system (when there are no external forces in action) the momentum before collision equals the momentum after the collision
-Elastic collision—no energy lost, objects bounce apart
Ex. if a bouncy ball was to bounce back at the same height
-Inelastic collision—objects “stick”
Ex. “Nickelodeon Gak”
-Impulse Momentum Relationship
Force x Time = Change in Momentum
Critical features:
o Stance width
o Maximum foot-rotation position
o Initial foot-contact symmetry
o Maximum knee-valgus angle
o Amount of lateral trunk flexion
o Initial landing of feet
o Amount of knee-flexion displacement
o Amount of trunk-flexion displacement
o Total joint displacement in the sagittal plane

Evaluation Plan:
-Landing Error Scoring System-Real Time (LESS-RT)
gives objective scores for landing mechanics
-Examine up the kinetic chain (feet to head)
-Fix flaws related to injury first
